Some reports mention another. Some social-media posts show tunnels and stations as if they have already been officially approved. Others describe the railway as if construction has already started.

That is not the present situation.

As of 2026, the Government of India has sanctioned the Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru new railway line survey/project, covering approximately 332 km. The project has moved into the Final Location Survey (FLS)/Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage, but the exact final village-by-village alignment, station locations, tunnel locations and land-acquisition boundaries should not be treated as final until the DPR and subsequent approvals are completed.

This article explains the project in simple terms – its history, present status, proposed route, N.R. Pura’s old railway connection, possible advantages, environmental concerns, technical challenges and what people living along the proposed corridor should realistically expect.

At a glance

Particular

Current information

Project

Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru New Railway Line

Approximate length

332 km

Region

Malnad and Coastal Karnataka

Railway zone

South Western Railway

Current stage

Survey/FLS and DPR-related process

Main purpose

Connect Shivamogga, Malnad, Sringeri and Mangaluru

Important proposed/advocated locations

Shivamogga, Bhadravati, N.R. What exactly is the Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru railway project?

The proposal is for a new railway line connecting Shivamogga with Sringeri and continuing towards Mangaluru.

The planned corridor is important because the geography of Karnataka currently leaves large parts of the central Malnad and the Sringeri region without direct railway access.

Today, travellers from places such as Sringeri, N.R. Pura and surrounding Malnad areas generally depend heavily on road transport to reach railway stations.

A new railway connection could change that.

The Government of India has officially identified the Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru new line as a 332-km railway survey/project. Parliamentary records have also listed the project among railway surveys sanctioned for improving connectivity to Mangaluru.

The project is therefore not merely a social-media proposal.

However, sanctioning a survey is not the same thing as completing construction.

That distinction is very important.

2. Is the railway line officially approved?

The answer requires a little explanation.

Yes – the railway survey/project is officially recognised.

The Government of India has sanctioned the survey for the 332-km Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru new line. Official parliamentary material lists it among the surveys for improving connectivity to Mangaluru.

In 2025, the Ministry of Railways again listed the project as a sanctioned survey.

In 2026, reports stated that the Centre had approved the preparation of the Final Location Survey and Detailed Project Report, with the Railway Ministry moving towards the next stage.

But this does NOT mean:

railway tracks are being laid today;

every village along the route has been finalised;

land acquisition has been completed;

every station has been officially fixed;

tunnel locations are final;

construction contracts for the entire railway have been awarded.

Those stages come later.

3. What is FLS?

Many people see the abbreviation FLS and assume that the railway route has already been completely finalised.

FLS means:

Final Location Survey

It is a detailed engineering survey used to establish the practical railway alignment.

A railway cannot simply be drawn as a straight line between two towns.

Engineers have to consider:

mountains;

valleys;

rivers;

existing roads;

existing railway infrastructure;

forests;

settlements;

agricultural land;

geological conditions;

bridges;

tunnels;

gradients;

curves;

railway safety;

environmental restrictions;

land acquisition;

construction cost;

drainage;

landslide-prone areas.

The FLS is therefore one of the most important stages before the actual construction decision.

A 2025 South Western Railway tender specifically covered conducting the FLS for the 332-km Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru new line.

In May 2026, Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna was reported as saying that the FLS had been completed and that tenders for the next stage were expected.

Because different stages and tender records have appeared over time, readers should understand that the existence of an FLS does not automatically mean that the final public DPR, land acquisition plan and construction alignment are already available to everyone.

4. What is the proposed route?

This is where most of the confusion begins.

The broad project is:

Shivamogga → Sringeri → Mangaluru

But the exact route between these places is still an important subject of discussion.

Recent 2026 reports have referred to a proposed alignment involving:

Shivamogga → Thirthahalli → Sringeri

At the same time, public representatives and local residents have been advocating an alignment through:

Shivamogga → Bhadravati → N.R. Pura → Koppa → Sringeri

A July 2026 report specifically discussed a request for the railway to pass through N.R. Pura and Koppa before reaching Sringeri.

Another July 2026 report also discussed the route issue and the Shivamogga–Thirthahalli–Sringeri proposal.

Therefore, readers should be careful with any map labelled “final railway route” unless it comes directly from an official railway DPR/alignment document.

5. Why is N.R. Pura important in this railway discussion?

Narasimharajapura – commonly called N.R. Pura – has a unique connection to railway history.

Unlike many places that are asking for their first railway connection, N.R. Pura actually had a railway/tramway connection more than a century ago.

That old railway history is one of the most interesting parts of the present story.

The historical railway connection also explains why local residents continue to discuss railway connectivity in N.R. Pura with such strong interest.

6. The old N.R. Pura railway: a forgotten chapter of Malnad history

This needs to be clearly separated from the proposed modern railway.

The old line was not the same railway that is being proposed today.

It was a narrow-gauge tramway operated under the Mysore State Railway system.

The Tarikere–Narasimharajapura Tramway was approximately 42 km long and used a 2-ft (610 mm) narrow gauge. Historical railway records state that the line was completed to N.R. Pura in 1917.

The railway/tramway was primarily connected with the movement of forest produce and goods, while passenger services were also operated.

The line originally began from Tarikere and passed through the Lakkavalli area before reaching N.R. Pura.

Historical records indicate that:

the Tarikere–Lakkavalli section opened for goods traffic in January 1915;

passenger service began in May 1915;

the line was extended towards N.R. Pura;

the N.R. Pura section was completed by 1917.

There was also a branch from Tadasa to Hebbe, approximately 15 km long, which was associated with the same system.

7. Why did the old N.R. Pura railway disappear?

The old railway eventually disappeared because of the development of the Bhadra reservoir.

Large portions of the area were submerged.

Historical research records that the Tarikere–Narasimharajapura and Tadasa–Hebbe lines were removed/closed around 1949, with the Bhadra reservoir submergence playing a major role.

This is an important historical lesson.

The old railway and the modern proposed railway are separated by roughly a century, but both are strongly influenced by the unique geography and water systems of the Malnad region.

8. Is the old railway track still present in N.R. Pura?

This is an important correction for anyone writing about the subject.

The old railway is not an operational railway track today.

The historical narrow-gauge line was closed and much of its infrastructure was removed or submerged.

However, historical remnants connected with the old railway still exist in the region.

One of the most notable examples is the historic Thadasa bridge.

A report on the bridge explains that it had both road and railway use and had nine arches. It was associated with the old route connecting the Tarikere side with N.R. Pura.

When reservoir water levels fall, portions of old structures and the history of the submerged settlements can become visible.

So, when someone says:

“There is an old railway track in N.R. Pura.”

the more accurate explanation is:

N.R. Pura has a historic railway/tramway legacy, but the old railway is not a functioning railway line today. Some historical structures/remains survive, while portions of the old route were lost or submerged following the Bhadra reservoir development.

That distinction prevents misinformation.

9. Could the new railway use the old N.R. Pura railway route?

Not automatically.

This is another point that needs to be understood.

The existence of an old railway route does not mean Indian Railways can simply rebuild the same route.

The old railway was:

narrow gauge;

constructed more than 100 years ago;

designed for a completely different purpose;

built under historical engineering standards;

affected by reservoir submergence;

passing through terrain that has changed considerably.

A modern railway would require completely new engineering studies.

The new line would have to meet modern standards for:

track geometry;

gradients;

bridges;

tunnels;

axle loads;

train speeds;

safety;

signalling;

drainage;

geological stability;

environmental requirements.

Therefore, the old railway route is historically important, but it should not be confused with the final alignment of the proposed modern railway.

10. Why are people asking for the railway through N.R. Pura and Koppa?

There are several practical reasons.

N.R. Pura and Koppa are important Malnad centres with surrounding agricultural, commercial, educational and tourism activity.

A railway station in or near these areas could potentially benefit:

local residents;

farmers;

students;

employees;

traders;

tourists;

religious visitors;

small businesses;

agricultural producers.

A July 2026 report highlighted a demand to route the railway through Shivamogga–N.R. Pura–Koppa–Sringeri, while also discussing the environmental considerations of such an alignment.

This is why N.R. Pura and Koppa are frequently mentioned in current discussions.

11. What about Thirthahalli?

Thirthahalli is another important location in the current discussion.

Recent reports have described a proposal involving:

Shivamogga → Thirthahalli → Sringeri

This has generated discussion because different alignments can produce different outcomes for communities, terrain, construction cost and environmental impact.

It is therefore better to describe Thirthahalli as part of a reported/proposed alignment discussion, rather than saying that a final station has already been legally fixed.

12. What about Agumbe and tunnels?

The Western Ghats are the biggest engineering challenge in this project.

The railway would have to negotiate extremely difficult terrain between the Malnad interior and the coast.

That can involve:

steep slopes;

deep valleys;

heavy rainfall;

landslide-prone terrain;

rivers and streams;

forest areas;

difficult geological formations.

This is why tunnels and major bridges are naturally expected to be part of the engineering discussion.

However, readers should be extremely careful with social-media maps showing:

“Tunnel starts here”

“10 km tunnel here”

“Agumbe tunnel confirmed”

unless those details come from an official railway engineering document.

As of the information publicly available in 2026, the exact final number, length and location of tunnels should not be presented as officially confirmed.

The Western Ghats issue is real, though. Recent reporting has specifically raised environmental and landslide concerns regarding the proposed railway project and other large infrastructure proposals in the region.

13. Why is building a railway through the Western Ghats difficult?

Building a railway across relatively flat land is one thing.

Building one through the Western Ghats is completely different.

A railway needs a controlled gradient.

A road can climb a hill with sharp bends and steep gradients, but railway locomotives and heavy trains require carefully controlled gradients.

Therefore, engineers may need:

long curves;

tunnels;

viaducts;

bridges;

cuttings;

retaining structures;

slope stabilisation;

extensive drainage.

The monsoon adds another challenge.

Malnad receives heavy rainfall, and water management becomes a major engineering requirement.

Poor drainage can weaken slopes.

Weak slopes can lead to landslides.

A landslide affecting a railway is not simply a road-blocking event. It can cause significant operational and safety problems.

14. The environmental question

This is probably the biggest negative side of the project.

The Western Ghats are one of India’s most ecologically important regions.

Any major infrastructure project crossing sensitive forest and hill terrain must balance:

development vs conservation.

The railway could bring enormous economic and social benefits.

At the same time, poorly planned construction could cause:

tree loss;

habitat fragmentation;

soil disturbance;

landslides;

drainage changes;

wildlife movement disruption;

increased human activity in sensitive areas;

construction-related pollution.

Environmental groups and residents have already raised concerns about major infrastructure development in the Western Ghats, including the proposed railway.

This does not automatically mean the railway should be rejected.

It means that the railway needs to be designed intelligently.

15. Could tunnels actually be good for the environment?

Potentially, yes.

This is an important part of the debate.

A surface railway through a mountain forest can require:

large cuttings;

tree removal;

slope modification;

road access;

construction camps.

A properly designed tunnel can sometimes reduce the amount of surface disturbance.

But tunnels are not automatically environmentally harmless.

Tunnel construction can involve:

excavation;

disposal of excavated material;

groundwater impacts;

construction roads;

ventilation systems;

emergency access;

geological risks.

So the question should not simply be:

“Tunnel or no tunnel?”

The better question is:

“Which alignment provides the safest, most economical and environmentally responsible solution?”

16. Economic benefits of the railway

If constructed successfully, this railway could have a significant effect on the Malnad economy.

16.1 Tourism

This could be one of the biggest advantages.

The corridor connects regions associated with:

Sringeri;

Malnad landscapes;

Western Ghats;

temples;

waterfalls;

forests;

trekking destinations;

plantation regions;

coastal Karnataka.

Sringeri in particular attracts pilgrims and visitors throughout the year.

A railway connection could make the journey easier for visitors travelling from distant parts of Karnataka and beyond.

17. Religious tourism

Sringeri is one of the most important spiritual destinations in Karnataka.

At present, visitors largely depend on road transport.

A railway station serving Sringeri or its surrounding region could potentially make the destination more accessible to:

elderly pilgrims;

families;

students;

organised pilgrimage groups;

tourists from other states.

The benefit would not necessarily be limited to Sringeri itself.

Nearby towns and villages could also benefit through:

hotels;

restaurants;

taxis;

local transport;

shops;

tourism services;

homestays.

18. Agricultural benefits

Malnad is known for agricultural and plantation products.

Depending on the final alignment and freight facilities, railway connectivity could potentially help producers move goods over longer distances.

Possible products include:

coffee;

arecanut;

spices;

pepper;

agricultural produce;

plantation products;

other regional commodities.

Rail transport can become particularly useful when moving larger quantities over long distances.

However, this benefit depends heavily on whether the railway is designed with practical freight facilities and whether sufficient freight demand exists.

A passenger railway alone does not automatically solve agricultural logistics.

19. Better connectivity to Mangaluru

Mangaluru is one of Karnataka’s major coastal economic centres.

It has:

a major port;

an international airport;

hospitals;

educational institutions;

commercial centres;

industries;

employment opportunities;

coastal tourism.

A direct railway connection between Malnad and Mangaluru could create a new transport corridor between the interior and coast.

This is one of the major strategic arguments supporting the project.

The Government of India has specifically described the project as part of efforts to improve connectivity to Mangaluru.

20. Benefits for students and patients

Not every railway benefit is measured in tonnes of cargo or tourism revenue.

Consider a student from a remote Malnad village who needs to travel to Mangaluru or Shivamogga for higher education.

Or a family travelling to Mangaluru for specialised medical treatment.

Today, such journeys may involve:

long bus journeys;

multiple connections;

expensive private vehicles;

unpredictable road conditions.

A railway could provide another transport option.

That social benefit could become one of the project’s most important long-term outcomes.

21. Employment opportunities

A large railway project can generate employment at multiple stages.

During construction:

engineers;

survey teams;

machine operators;

drivers;

construction workers;

tunnel workers;

bridge workers;

safety personnel;

support staff.

After completion:

station employees;

railway maintenance staff;

track workers;

signal and telecom personnel;

security staff;

commercial employees;

catering;

local transport operators.

Indirect employment can be even larger.

22. Development of smaller towns

Railway stations frequently become development centres.

A station can create demand for:

hotels;

restaurants;

shops;

auto/taxi services;

parking;

warehouses;

small businesses;

rental properties.

But there is also a warning.

Unplanned development around stations can cause:

traffic congestion;

waste management problems;

land speculation;

uncontrolled construction.

Therefore, station-area planning should happen before the railway opens.

23. Possible advantages for Shivamogga

Shivamogga could become an important gateway for the Malnad railway corridor.

The city already has railway connectivity.

A new western/southwestern connection could potentially strengthen Shivamogga’s role as a regional transport centre.

This could improve access towards:

Shivamogga → Malnad → Sringeri → coastal Karnataka

It could also create opportunities for better connections with existing railway routes.

24. Possible advantages for Mangaluru

For Mangaluru, the project could provide another inland connection.

It could potentially bring:

more tourists;

additional passenger traffic;

freight opportunities;

stronger links with Malnad;

access to new markets;

greater regional integration.

For a coastal city, stronger connections with the interior are economically valuable.

25. Could the railway reduce road traffic?

Potentially.

If people choose trains instead of private cars and buses for long-distance travel, road traffic can reduce.

However, the railway will not replace roads.

Road transport will remain essential for:

villages;

farms;

last-mile travel;

local tourism;

goods collection;

station access.

The ideal system is not railway vs road.

It is:

Railway + road + bus + local transport working together.

26. What are the disadvantages?

Every major infrastructure project has disadvantages.

The biggest concerns are:

1. Environmental impact

The Western Ghats are ecologically sensitive.

2. High construction difficulty

Mountains, tunnels, bridges and rainfall increase construction complexity.

3. Cost overruns

Difficult terrain can increase the final cost.

4. Land acquisition

Private land, agricultural land and other properties may be required.

5. Forest permissions

Sensitive areas may require extensive environmental review and permissions.

6. Landslide risk

The Malnad and Western Ghats receive heavy rainfall and contain unstable slopes in some areas.

7. Long construction period

A difficult 332-km railway cannot realistically be expected to appear overnight.

8. Financial viability

A railway must eventually generate enough traffic or provide sufficient strategic/social value to justify its cost.

27. The biggest question: Will the railway be financially successful?

This is a fair question.

Railway projects are expensive.

A 332-km railway through challenging terrain requires substantial investment.

One 2026 report quoted an estimated project cost of approximately Rs 3,300 crore, although the final cost can change substantially after detailed engineering, DPR preparation and other approvals.

The final financial picture depends on:

construction cost;

number of tunnels;

number and size of bridges;

land acquisition;

environmental mitigation;

passenger demand;

freight demand;

station development;

maintenance cost.

Therefore, it is better not to advertise the Rs 3,300-crore figure as a guaranteed final project cost.

28. Why the exact route matters so much

Suppose two possible routes exist.

Route A

Shivamogga → Thirthahalli → Sringeri

Route B

Shivamogga → Bhadravati → N.R. Pura → Koppa → Sringeri

Both may connect the major destinations.

But they can differ significantly in:

total engineering difficulty;

distance;

tunnel requirements;

bridge requirements;

forest impact;

population served;

land acquisition;

construction cost;

travel time;

tourism potential.

That is why the final alignment cannot responsibly be decided from a simple Google Maps line.

Engineers need detailed ground surveys.

29. Why people should not trust every railway map circulating online

This is especially important in 2026.

Many unofficial maps are being shared online.

Some combine:

old proposals;

new proposals;

local demands;

hypothetical tunnels;

estimated stations;

old railway routes.

The result looks extremely convincing.

But a professional-looking map is not necessarily an official railway alignment.

A useful rule:

If the map does not come from Indian Railways, South Western Railway, the Ministry of Railways, an official DPR or an officially published government document, treat exact station/tunnel/village information as provisional.

This is particularly important for landowners.

People should not panic because an unofficial map shows a railway line passing through their property.

Likewise, people should not purchase land simply because an unofficial map shows a future railway station nearby.

30. What will happen after the DPR?

A DPR – Detailed Project Report – is one of the most important documents before a major railway project proceeds.

It generally brings together information such as:

final engineering concept;

alignment;

stations;

bridges;

tunnels;

construction packages;

estimated cost;

land requirements;

traffic projections;

technical feasibility;

environmental considerations;

project implementation strategy.

After the necessary approvals and funding decisions, the project can progress towards:

Land acquisition → clearances → tendering → construction → track laying → signalling/electrification → testing → safety inspection → commissioning.

So even after a DPR is prepared, several stages remain before passengers can board a train.

31. What could the railway look like?

The final railway could potentially include:

Stations

Major stations at important towns, with smaller stations or halts depending on the final traffic study.

Bridges

Numerous bridges would likely be required because of the region’s rivers and streams.

Tunnels

Potentially important in the Western Ghats where maintaining acceptable railway gradients requires passing through hills.

Viaducts

These may be required across valleys and difficult terrain.

Modern signalling

The final railway would use modern signalling and safety systems appropriate to Indian Railways standards.

Electrification

The exact electrification arrangement should be taken from the final railway design rather than assumed from unofficial maps.

32. What about the Sringeri temple?

The railway’s biggest tourism opportunity may be Sringeri.

However, one important point should be understood:

A railway station named “Sringeri” does not necessarily mean that the railway track will pass directly beside the temple.

Railway stations require:

suitable land;

manageable gradients;

engineering feasibility;

road access;

safety clearances;

space for platforms and facilities.

Therefore, the final station could be outside the core town area, with road transport connecting passengers to the temple.

This is normal for many pilgrimage destinations.

33. A railway can change Sringeri’s tourism economy

If a practical railway station is developed near Sringeri, the town could see major changes.

Visitors who currently avoid long road journeys may find train travel more attractive.

This could increase:

pilgrim numbers;

hotel occupancy;

restaurants;

taxi services;

local shopping;

tour packages;

homestays.

But tourism growth should be managed carefully.

Sringeri is not just a tourist destination.

It is also a culturally and environmentally sensitive Malnad town.

34. The environmental balance: development without destroying Malnad

This may ultimately determine the project’s success.

The best railway is not necessarily the railway that is built fastest.

The best railway is the one that provides connectivity while causing the least avoidable environmental damage.

That means engineers should consider:

maximum use of tunnels where appropriate;

minimum unnecessary forest cutting;

wildlife movement;

slope stabilisation;

proper drainage;

controlled construction access;

safe disposal of excavated material;

restoration of disturbed land;

protection of rivers and streams;

strict construction monitoring.

Recent reporting has highlighted concerns about infrastructure development in the Western Ghats, particularly because of landslide and ecological risks.

35. What local residents should watch for

People living around the potential corridor should not depend entirely on WhatsApp forwards.

When the project progresses, residents should look for official information regarding:

Final alignment maps.

Land acquisition notifications.

Survey numbers.

Village-wise affected land.

Environmental clearances.

Forest permissions.

Station locations.

Road overbridges and underpasses.

Compensation procedures.

Construction tenders.

These documents will be much more important than unofficial maps.

36. A special note for N.R. Pura residents

N.R. Pura has something unique to say about this project.

It is not simply a town asking for railway connectivity.

It once had railway connectivity.

The historical Tarikere–Narasimharajapura tramway was part of the region’s transport history more than 100 years ago. The line connected N.R. Pura with Tarikere and was used for the movement of forest produce and passengers.

The old line disappeared after the Bhadra reservoir transformed the landscape.

Today, the idea of a modern railway once again reaching N.R. Pura is therefore more than a new infrastructure proposal.

For many local residents, it represents the possibility of reconnecting a region that once had a railway and lost it.

37. Old railway vs new railway

Historical N.R. What is the most realistic expectation in 2026?

The most realistic way to describe the project today is:

The Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru railway is a serious, officially surveyed new-line project, but it is still progressing through the planning, survey, DPR and approval stages. The broad corridor is known, while the exact final alignment, stations, tunnels and land requirements should be confirmed through official railway documents before being treated as final.

That is the clearest and safest description.

39. What could happen in the next few years?

If the project progresses smoothly, the broad sequence could be:

Stage 1 – Survey

Detailed ground and engineering studies.

Stage 2 – DPR

Detailed technical and financial planning.

Stage 3 – Approvals

Railway, environmental, forest and other statutory approvals wherever applicable.

Stage 4 – Land acquisition

Identification and acquisition of required land.

Stage 5 – Tendering

Construction packages awarded to contractors.

Stage 6 – Construction

Earthwork, bridges, tunnels, stations and track.

Stage 7 – Railway systems

Signalling, telecommunications, electrification and other systems.

Stage 8 – Testing

Inspection and safety testing.

Stage 9 – Commissioning

Opening sections of the line for railway operations.

This is why a railway project should be viewed as a long-term infrastructure programme, not as something that can be completed immediately after a survey.

40. The bigger picture for Karnataka

The Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru railway is not just about three cities.

It potentially connects three very different geographical and economic zones:

Interior Karnataka

Shivamogga and surrounding regions.

Malnad

The hills, plantations, forests and pilgrimage centres around the Western Ghats.

Coastal Karnataka

Mangaluru and the surrounding coastal economy.

A successful railway could bring these regions closer together economically and socially.

41. Possible long-term impact

If the railway is eventually completed and operates successfully, its impact could extend well beyond passenger travel.

It could encourage:

tourism;

local entrepreneurship;

agricultural marketing;

education access;

healthcare access;

employment;

regional investment;

better inter-district connectivity;

stronger interior-coastal trade.

But these benefits will only materialise if the railway has:

useful stations;

practical timetables;

affordable fares;

reliable service;

good last-mile connectivity;

sufficient passenger demand;

appropriate freight facilities.

Simply building tracks is not enough.

42. The biggest challenge: building responsibly

The Malnad region has waited a long time for improved connectivity.

At the same time, Malnad’s forests, rivers and mountains cannot be replaced once they are damaged.

Therefore, the real goal should not be:

“Build the railway at any cost.”

It should be:

“Build the railway in the most technically sound, financially responsible and environmentally sustainable way possible.”

That is the approach that could allow development and conservation to coexist.

43. Final conclusion

The Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru railway line is one of the most interesting proposed infrastructure projects for Karnataka’s Malnad and coastal regions.

The project is approximately 332 km long and has been officially taken up for survey/planning. The Government of India has recognised the new line as a railway survey project, and 2026 reports indicate movement towards the FLS/DPR and subsequent tendering stages.

But the project is not yet a completed railway line, and the exact final route should not be confused with unofficial maps.

The biggest current route discussion involves whether the corridor should serve areas such as N.R. Pura and Koppa, alongside the reported Shivamogga–Thirthahalli–Sringeri proposal.

N.R. Pura also has a remarkable railway history of its own.

More than a century ago, the Tarikere–Narasimharajapura narrow-gauge tramway connected the region with Tarikere. The line was eventually closed around 1949, with the Bhadra reservoir submergence playing a major role in the disappearance of the old route.

Today, the possibility of a modern railway returning to the N.R. Pura region gives this story an unusual historical connection:

A place that once had a railway could potentially become part of a new railway corridor more than 100 years later.

The future of the project will depend on engineering feasibility, the final alignment, environmental considerations, land acquisition, financial viability, government approvals and ultimately the decision to proceed with construction.

For the people of Shivamogga, N.R. Pura, Koppa, Thirthahalli, Sringeri and the wider Malnad region, the railway represents more than just a train.

It represents the possibility of shorter journeys, better access to education and healthcare, stronger tourism, improved trade and a new connection between the Malnad and the coast.

At the same time, the project carries a responsibility.

Malnad’s development should not come at the cost of Malnad itself.

If the railway is designed with careful engineering, environmental responsibility and genuine consideration for local communities, it could become one of the most transformative transport projects in this part of Karnataka.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru railway officially proposed?

Yes. The Government of India has officially listed the 332-km Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru new railway line survey/project.

Is construction already happening?

The project should not be described as an operational construction project yet. It is progressing through survey, DPR and approval-related stages.

How long is the proposed railway?

Approximately 332 km.

Will the railway definitely pass through N.R. Pura?

This should not yet be stated as final. N.R. Pura is strongly advocated as part of the route, and recent reports have specifically discussed a Shivamogga–N.R. Pura–Koppa–Sringeri alignment, but the final alignment must be confirmed through official railway documentation.

Will it pass through Thirthahalli?

A Shivamogga–Thirthahalli–Sringeri route has been reported as part of the current route discussion. The final alignment remains subject to the official process.

Will there be tunnels?

Tunnels are likely to be an important engineering consideration because of the Western Ghats, but exact tunnel locations and lengths should not be presented as final without the official DPR/alignment documents.

Did N.R. Pura have a railway before?

Yes. The historical Tarikere–Narasimharajapura narrow-gauge tramway connected Tarikere with N.R. Pura and was completed to N.R. Pura in 1917.

Is the old N.R. Pura railway still operating?

No.

Is the old railway track still fully present?

No. The historical line was closed around 1949, and substantial portions were removed or affected by the Bhadra reservoir. Historical structures such as the Thadasa bridge remain associated with the old railway story.

Will the new railway follow the old railway route?

Not necessarily. A modern railway requires a completely new engineering and environmental assessment.

Why is the project important?

It could improve connectivity between Shivamogga, the Malnad region, Sringeri and Mangaluru while supporting tourism, agriculture, education, healthcare, employment and regional economic development.

What is the biggest concern?

The biggest challenge is balancing infrastructure development with the environmental sensitivity and difficult terrain of the Western Ghats.

Important note for readers

This article intentionally does not present unofficial village lists, tunnel numbers or land survey numbers as final facts.

Railway alignment information can change during engineering surveys, DPR preparation, environmental assessment and approval processes.

Readers should verify any land-related information through official railway and government notifications before making financial or property decisions.

Last updated: 21 August 2026

Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru Railway Line: Complete Route, History, Benefits, Challenges & Latest 2026 Update Shivamogga–Sringeri–Mangaluru Railway Line | 332 km Proposed New Railway Project | Latest 2026 Information For decades, people across Karnataka’s Malnad region have dreamed of a railway connection linking the interior Malnad with Sringeri and the coastal city of Mangaluru.
